Post Operative Instructions

Your care continues after you leave our office. Following proper post-operative instructions is essential for healing, comfort, and long-term success.
Below are general guidelines for common procedures. Please remember that you may receive specific instructions from Dr. Josephson based on your individual treatment—always follow those directions first.
If you experience severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, or unusual swelling, contact our office immediately.

Tooth Extractions
After a tooth extraction, protecting the blood clot that forms in the socket is critical for proper healing.
After your extraction:
- Bite gently on gauze for 30–60 minutes to control bleeding
- Avoid vigorous rinsing for 24 hours
- Do not use a straw for at least 3–5 days
- Avoid smoking or tobacco products
- Eat soft foods for the first few days
- Apply an ice pack (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling
- Take medications as prescribed
Mild discomfort and swelling are normal. If pain worsens after a few days, contact our office to rule out dry socket.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is often performed to support future implant placement or preserve bone after extraction.
After bone grafting:
- Avoid disturbing the surgical site
- Do not brush directly over the area for several days
- Avoid hard, crunchy, or sharp foods
- Do not smoke
- Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed
- Expect mild swelling and minor bleeding
You may notice small particles in your mouth during healing—this can be normal. However, if excessive material is lost or bleeding persists, contact us.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy removes infection from the inside of the tooth and protects it from further damage.
After your root canal:
- Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it is fully restored
- Expect mild tenderness for a few days
- Take anti-inflammatory medication as recommended
- Maintain regular brushing and flossing
- Schedule your permanent restoration (such as a crown) if needed
If you experience increasing pain, swelling, or signs of infection, please contact our office.
Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implants require careful healing to allow proper integration with the jawbone.
After implant surgery:
- Avoid chewing directly on the implant site
- Eat soft foods for several days
- Avoid smoking, as it can interfere with healing
- Gently rinse with a prescribed mouthwash if instructed
- Take antibiotics and pain medication as directed
- Apply ice packs to minimize swelling
Some swelling and mild discomfort are normal for several days. Proper healing is essential for long-term implant success.
